The Technical Theater Director is responsible for teaching two classes (typically one middle school and one upper school) in the art of technical theater; providing technical theater direction, design and construction for all Kent Denver School stage productions (upper school musical, middle school musical, upper school one-act play festival), concerts, and speakers; and manage all theater spaces (the Anschutz Family Theater, the Black Box Theater, and the El Pomar Theater) and theater workshop.

This individual will collaborate with teachers, theater directors, music faculty, students, and staff to create a safe and professional environment for school performances and work to develop outstanding student skills in the area of technical theater, builds, lights and sound.

The Technical Theater Director will manage and maintain all performance spaces; the audio, lighting, and other technical equipment for those spaces; and the theater tech workshop. In collaboration with directors and performers, the Technical Theater Director will design sound, lighting, and set for stage performances.

The Technical Theater Director is responsible for teaching and training students in technical aspects of theater production, lighting and lighting design, set design, stage management, and sound and set construction.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Technical Equipment Management & Support

  • Provide technical support and design for school performances and events in all theater spaces, including setting up, operating, and troubleshooting audio and lighting systems.

  • Create and strike of production elements, including scenery and large props.

  • Operate, maintain, and repair lighting, sound, and other technical equipment used in theater productions.

  • Design, create, and paint with artistry builds.

  • Ensure all technical equipment is in good working order, and schedule regular maintenance and repairs as needed.

  • Keep the shops and performance spaces neat, organized, and safe.

  • Maintain an inventory of all tools and equipment.

  • Upgrade, purchase, and replace equipment and tools as they break or become worn out.

  • Support technical theater needs for summer programs.

Teaching

  • Teach 2 tech theater classes each semester of the academic year.

  • Assist in training and mentoring students interested in technical aspects of theater production—lighting, set building, design, and stage management.

  • Monitor and direct the work of the student production crew.

  • Promote a culture of safety, responsibility, and professionalism among student technicians.

Planning & Collaboration

  • Work closely with the Director of Arts, Division Heads, Arts Department Chair, Director of Summer Program and arts faculty to plan and execute productions effectively and efficiently.

  • Coordinate with other departments to ensure smooth technical support for all activities and school events taking place in the theater.

  • Collaborate with production designers, directors, and faculty in the development of production schedules, deadlines, and needs.

  • Advise on the technical specifications, costs, and usage of technical equipment required for individual shows and supervise the implementation of approved technical designs.

Safety & Compliance

  • Enforce safety protocols and ensure the well-being of students, staff, and equipment during theater productions and rehearsals.

  • Maintain knowledge of and adherence to local and state safety regulations.

  • Provide first-line maintenance support for all relevant technical equipment, tools, machines, furniture, fixtures, and fittings.

  • Ensure all equipment is stored safely and is accessible to others when absent.

  • Maintain an inventory of all equipment and materials held and used.

  • Liaise with IT staff over software requirements and system support.

  • Ensures the public areas of the theater and/or production space are in a safe and presentable condition.

Other

  • Other duties as assigned by the Arts Director

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in technical theater, including lighting, sound, and audio-visual equipment operation

  • Should have studied lighting and set design, audio and soundboard studies, and know how to light production, design and implement theater set building.

  • Knowledge of shop equipment and tools and experience with design and set building

  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.

  • Excellent communication, organization, and teamwork skills.

  • Experience working with directors and in performance situations

  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as required for school performances and events.

  • Commitment to creating a safe, efficient, and inclusive theater production environment.

  • Experience working in an educational or K-12 school setting preferred

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry heavy equipment (up to 50 lbs).

  • Ability to work at heights using ladders, lifts, and scaffolding.

  • Ability to stand, kneel, and crouch for extended periods during events and productions.

OTHER DETAILS:

Start Date: as soon as possible.

Annual Salary: $55,000 - $75,000

Full Time with full benefits

Work Hours: through June 30, 2024, full-time, salaried/exempt; Monday - Friday 7:45 am - 4:15 pm, evenings and weekends as needed (start and finish times based on school hours and may shift on days with evening job commitments)
