Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Orientation and Mobility or Special Education, Certification as a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS), and 1+ years Orientation and Mobility Specialist experience required. Applicants who do not meet these qualifications will not be considered.

Providing specialized support to students with visual impairments, this role focuses on enhancing independence and mobility within a K-12 educational setting.

Location: Morganton, North Carolina
Position Type: Contract, School Year (CSY)

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct assessments to determine students orientation and mobility needs
  • Develop and implement individualized plans to teach safe travel skills
  • Collaborate with educators, families, and related service providers to integrate mobility goals into academic and daily activities
  • Provide direct instruction to students using cane techniques, sensory awareness, and environmental analysis
  • Monitor progress and adjust strategies to meet evolving student needs
  • Maintain detailed documentation and comply with all applicable educational and safety standards

Qualifications:

  • Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS or equivalent)
  • Experience supporting children with visual impairments in a K-12 environment
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage caseload efficiently
  • Knowledge of relevant laws and best practices related to special education and disability services
