These responsibilities will facilitate the research and teaching success of the department, it’s Chair, Principal Investigators (PI’s) and research staff. The incumbent will advance the department’s mission described as follows: The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine will continue to deliver the highest quality of professional education and training, and conduct cutting-edge research at the GW School of Medicine, and achieve the status of a premier biomedical research and education center in the nation.

This senior level position focuses on providing research program support and pre-award and post-award management on behalf of the Biochemistry Department’s Bioinformatics program. This position works closely with Principal Investigators, managing day-to-day operations through direct grant award and administrative contributions to ensure research success. This position makes recommendations to policy and procedures, and may have authority to implement changes with minimal supervision. This position usually identifies potential grant opportunities and proposal development efforts and maintains fiscal responsibility, as well as outreach to other GW stakeholders in order to assist in maintaining standard operational efficiencies.

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provides fiscal and administrative coordination, facilitation and management of standard and complex sponsored awarded projects for the Bioinformatics lab; includes day-to-day administration in support of grant activities, annual progress reports, project closeouts, effort reporting, etc.
  • Maintains continual contact with PIs, OVPR and the Grants and Contracts Office (GCAS) and others concerning financial matters related to Bioinformatics related sponsored projects elevating as needed to the Department Manager.
  • Meets regularly with Bioinformatics project staff and coordinators to facilitate programmatic administration with attention to task and deadline driven activities.
  • Provides program support for biochemistry related projects through the creation, implementation and maintenance of central files, purchase orders, dashboards, shadow budgets, projections and other related documentation and records.
  • Provides accurate, timely and professional post-award administrative support services to faculty and staff in the department. This includes procurement of goods and services, consultant agreements, service agreements, travel requests, honorariums, expense reports, research subject payments, etc.
  • Coordinates research related personnel activities to be approved by the Department Manager for effort reporting process, faculty and staff salary projections, and timely allocations of salaries to appropriate cost centers.
  • Ensures research faculty and staff are adhering to all fiscal university policies and procedures.
  • Provides varied administrative and office support duties to include travel-related expenses & reimbursements, event planning, meeting scheduling and other logistics tasks.
  • Monitors Biochemistry Department post award budgets to include maintenance and monthly reconciliation of grant transactions to ensure they are properly recorded to the appropriate cost center and that all required source documentation and approvals are on file.
  • Reviews and approves expenses against the approved budget and SMHS, University and Federal policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Creates and distributes Biochemistry Department project period of performance budgets after approval by the Department Manager related to grant funds, subcontracts, and other contracts.
  • Prepares reports for Biochemistry Department, SMHS, University, and funding agencies both federal and non-federal awards, monthly and ad-hoc.
  • Assists Biochemistry Department faculty with pre-awards functions, when needed. This includes preparing proposal budgets, gathering application documents and ensuring timelines are met.
  • Enhances professional knowledge and skills by attending seminars/workshops and reviewing published literature.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 2 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
